As sarcastic as a cheese log is cheesey
My culture’s cuisine
I remember fondly the image of my father, just come in from a cold new england winter, snow on his beard and cheese log on his shoulder
Don’t get me wrong I like this place on the whole, but I’ve just come to realise nobody here actually wants to engage with anybody different and just dog piles.
We are the left wing version of r/conservative.
So brave of you to stand up to left wing people dismantling your arguments!
…but yes people aren’t interested in your desire to “both sides” reality by dropping out necessary context until the picture looks like two sides having a friendly disagreement… because the reality is conservatives WANT to hurt us and for some reason people are mad about that here.
I am not sure if there is away out
There is and has been this whole time a massive blinking sign that points to the way out and it is called “Unionize”
Nah he is actually pretty good, almost as good as Elizabeth Holmes!
It’s that any public conversation broad enough to be culturally significant will be so full of AI debris that it will be almost impossible for humans to find each other.
This is the part that I question, this is certainly a fear and it totally makes sense to me but as I have argued in other threads recently I think there is a very good chance that while those in power believe that an analog of the Kessler Syndrome will happen in information, and this is precisely why they most of them are pushing this future, that it might hilariously backfire on them in a spectacular way.
I have a theory I call the “Wind-up Flashlight Theory” which is that when the internet reaches a dead state full of AI nonsense that makes it impossible to connect with humans, that rather than it being the completion of a process of censorship and oppression of thought that our imagination cannot escape from, a darkness and gloom that nobody can find their way in… the darkness simply serves to highlight the people in the room who have wind-up flashlights and are able to make their own light.
To put it another way, every step the internet takes towards being a hopeless storm of AI bots drowning out any human voices… might actually just be adding more negative space to a picture where the small amount of human places on the internet by comparison starkly stand out as positive spaces EVEN MORE and people become EVEN MORE likely to flock to those places because the difference just keeps getting more and more undeniable.
Lastly I want to rephrase this in a way that hopefully inspires, every step the rich and authoritarians of the world take to push the internet takes towards being dead makes the power of our words on the fediverse increase all by itself, you don’t have to do anything but keep being ernest, vulnerable and human. Imagine you have been cranking a wind-up flashlight and feeling impotent because there were harsh bright flourescent lights glaring over you in the room… but now the lights just got cut and for the first time people can see clearly the light you bring in its full power and love for humanity.
That is the moment I believe we are in RIGHT NOW
*For now
So they’re using their spectacular failure as a chance to exploit their new ‘employees’ via the gig economy.
To the ruling class this was always the true lucrative appeal of A.I. and is precisely why they were willing to make such massive bets on a fundamentally broken technology.
The cherry on top is tech work used to be a threat to big businesses, especially big tech companies, because society considered tech work to be a respectable job. Big businesses/oligarchs saw this as an obstacle to destroying tech work as a decent paying career and A.I. was the perfect tool of propaganda to remove the obstacle because even most tech workers bought the lies hook line and sinker.
I agree but I don’t think it has much to do with the tool itself beyond it being a superb culpability obscuring tool, what we are witnessing is essentially a birth of a religion just a super lame one.
A status quo where people are not allowed to break in rhetoric or ideology as quality of life plummets will create a rising potential for the introduction of a concept that nullifies or simply exists outside the framework of that status quo worldview that is strangling people but they do not believe they can escape.
For people who are obsessed with AI, the unreality of it is precisely what lets AI function as an ideological lifeboat that doesn’t require grappling with the immense issues with our worldviews and assumptions as a society because AI can be added to contexts as a Deus Ex Machina that disguises and explains away incrongruities between our broken world views and the desperate reality caused by them.
Sam Altman exhibit A?
Me and my cat like to bring each other the successful kills from our hunts, but unlike my cat I stick to my species…

I think one of the more funny spontaneous games that I have seen someone come up with their cat was they found out their cat loves to bat around wine corks on their wooden floor, so they got a big jar of wine corks and occasionally would throw one onto the floor and the cat would launch off like a rocket, batting at it and bouncing it off the walls.
I have seen that kind of thing before with a cat batting an object and chasing it as it richoted across a room, but the wine corks just worked SO well and this cat really really really loved chasing them.
Hey, I have a roaring dumpsterfire of money over here, would you like to invest in this one too?
It’s a weird space. I used to think we were on the verge of entering a whole new era of technology but now I think it’s going to be muted. Perhaps AI (as we know it now) eased some tasks and eliminated some BS stuff that used to waste our time, but we’ve not yet completely eliminated most professional jobs - if anything I think we just added more for them to learn and do to remain competitive.
How could anyone have predicted this outcome!?
Way too late to matter you coward
I am not sure I remember anymore, I have eaten my tail one too many times.
I don’t think this is a direct meaning of the metaphor, though any metaphor of endlessly repeating cycles can be placed in a rhetorical framework where it represents enshittification so I am sure I am not the first person to add or tweak the metaphor with that context.
What most people don’t know about the ouroboros is that every time the creature eats itself it becomes a little bit closer to being a turd (a consequence of its peculiar metabolism) so even though from an inside perspective the system appears to be in a complex mysterious cyclic kind of stasis, from the outside it is just more and more obviously a turd in the shape of a donut.
Can you make the algorithm open source that determined it was ok for you to murder Tuvix tho
Social media didn’t break people’s brains, the massive influx of conservative corporate money to distort society and keep existential problems from being fixed until it is too late and push people resort to to impulsive, kneejerk responses because they have been ground down to crumbs… broke people’s brains.
If we didn’t have social media right now and all of this was happening, it would be SO much worse without younger people being able to find news about the Palestinian Genocide or other world news that their country/the rich conservatives around them don’t want them to read.
It is what those in power DID to social media that broke people’s brains and it is why most of us have come here to create a social network not being driven by those interests.
The only way this could be an even remotely scientifically rigorous study is if they randomly selected the people who were going to respond to the AI responses and made sure they were human.
Anybody with half a brain knows just reading reddit comments and not assuming most of them are bots or shills is a hilariously naive act, the fact that “researchers” did the same for a scientific study is embarassing.
